Alésia

Dominating the landscapes of the Land of Art and History of Auxois, the statue of Vercingetorix marks the site of Alesia. It is here that in 52 BC, a battle took place that allowed Julius Caesar to bring all of Gaul within the Roman Empire.

The MuseoPark of Alésia, the interpretation centre for the site, opened in 2012. Dedicated to the siege of Alésia and the myth of the Gallic origins of France, it shows the viewpoints of the besiegers and the besieged. Years of excavation have uncovered a typical Gallo-Roman city. The Archaeological Museum tells of the life and culture of its inhabitants.
